History

Hurst Green Singers has been in distinguished existence for over 45 years. In 1961, the Reverend John Bickersteth of St John’s Church, Hurst Green, gathered together a group of singers to assist in a production of TS Elliot’s ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ performed by players from Oxford University. The singers continued to meet informally, encouraged by the vicar (who later became Bishop of Bath and Wells), and so Hurst Green Singers was formed with Richard Carter as its first conductor.

Michale Barlow
conductor since 1985

When Len Maynard took over as conductor in 1975, the choir began to perform larger works, frequently with an orchestra of local musicians.

The present conductor, Michael Barlow, an active organist, accompanist, singer and conductor, has been with the choir since 1985. He has continued his predecessor’s policy of performing large works (although not exclusively), usually with organ accompaniment, but whenever possible with orchestra.

2010 is a special year of celebration for Hurst Green Singers, being both the 50th anniversary of the Choir's formation and Michael Barlow's 25th year as the Choir's Director of Music.
